LINCOLN —On Wednesday, Oct. 10, the Alliance Boys Tennis Team traveled to Lincoln for Nebraska State Tennis. Participating in State Tennis on Thursday were Bryson Darveau and Kirk Sanders in singles along with the doubles teams Devin Garcia and Chance Crowe and Zachary Placek and Harley Hill. Coaches Sandi Blankenship, Sherrye Belford and Linda Dean along with manager Jaime Fernandez Gonzalez-Palacios accompanied the team.
Darveau, a sophomore, came out strong with a win in the first set in No. Singles but unfortunately fell in the next two sets against Chaz Bogle, a junior from Omaha Gross Catholic, to lose his round one match eliminating him from the tournament. Sanders picked up a singles win in round one along with both doubles teams pushing them all through to round two.
In Round 2 of No. 2 singles, Sanders met up with No. 1 seed Will Ulrich, 17-0, a tough Pius X opponent. The sophomore eliminated Sanders from the tournament with scores of 0-6 and 1-6. Both doubles teams were eliminated from the tournament with No. 1 doubles Garcia/Crowe losing to No. 6 Elkhorn, 21-8, 0-6 and 2-6 while No. 2 doubles Placek/Hill, who came in at the No. 11 seed with a 17-4 record, lost 4-6 and 0-6 to No. 6 Hastings, who was 20-10.
Alliance’s most recent champion was Ethan Stout who took the No. 1 singles title in 2004.
