Joel Schafer

Joel Schafer passed away peacefully in his home on January 19, 2019, surrounded by family and friends.

A dynamic man of adventure, Joel was a Navy Veteran for 10 years, and then an engineer for BNSF for 30 years. He loved to travel and hunt. A renowned custom gunstock maker, Joel authored two books, and was widely considered an expert in gun checkering and photography.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Barbara Schafer; seven children: Eric, Thad, Mary, Stephani, Amy, Thomas, and Natalie, and their spouses; 21 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; three brothers: Rick, Scott, and Clint Schafer and their spouses; countless extended family, and close friends. Deceased’s Funeral Arrangements:  A rosary will be held at 7:00 pm on Sunday, January 27, 2019, and funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Monday, January 28, 2019, both at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Alliance, NE, followed by a Celebration of Life party at the Eagles Club in Alliance. In lieu of flowers or plants, the family kindly requests donations to be given in Joel’s name to the Nebraska Humane Society online at www.nehumanesociety.org, or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital online at www.stjude.org.
