The 7th Street Dance studio recently donated $3,000 to the Bulldog Backpack Program.
Funds were raised from the 2019 Dance Recital.
Each year the dance studio chooses a local charity to give to.
The program is designed to meet the needs of hungry children and provides food when other resources aren't available, such as weekends and school vacations. The food is nutritious, child friendly & easily consumed.
The Backpack program was started by Cheryl Harris and Carol Shimek.
At the beginning of the school year, school counselors identify children in need and for this year they serve 160 APS students from early childhood to the alternative school.
Letters are sent to the parents requesting permission to participate and making sure there are no allergies.
The bags are delivered to the schools for distribution on Friday and each child receives a bag. The program begins the week after Labor Day and continues through the last week of school. The cost of each "backpack" is $5.50 to $6.50 depending on what food is sent.
Once a month jars of peanut butter and jelly and a voucher for 1 gallon of fresh milk is included in the bags. These vouchers are redeemed at Grocery Kart. Over 40 volunteers pack, deliver totes to schools, pick up empty totes, return them, and one volunteer calls each member of their 4 teams each week as a reminder.
