Walk into the Masonic Center noontime Monday through Friday and you will find it bustling with activity as various service groups, business and families each volunteer to provide a meal at no cost to those in the community. While many of the meals are donated to Community Table, which operates under Box Butte County Family Focus Coalition, Community Table ensures that the meals run smoothly and covers the cost when there is no one to serve a meal, paper products, insurance and other expenses. While costs for the service to the community is kept low there are still expenses. To help with the daily expenses of this service, Community Table has received a matching grant challenge from Immanuel Vision Foundation, Omaha for up to $4350. The Immanuel Vision Foundation, Omaha will match each dollar donated to Community Table by October 31.
Community Table began last summer as a way to fill a gap during the summer by providing a meal primarily to children that may rely on most of their nourishment from school meals. Over the summer, it became clear that hunger in the community extends far beyond children and that a year round meal would be ideal to help fill the gap of hunger in the community. This October, Community Table celebrates its one year anniversary of providing a daily meal Monday through Friday year round at its current location in the Masonic Center. Community Table is unique in that each day a different group provides the meals that are served to the public at no cost. Walk into Community Table and you will find a welcome environment where the only motto is “No One Leaves Hungry.”
