Drug Take Back Day Collects 144 Pounds

The April 27 Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) Drug Take Back Day held at the Medical Arts Plaza from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. collected 144 lbs. of medication.

All drugs are shipped by registered law enforcement agencies to the DEA for safe disposal. The hospital also uses the day to collect sharps (used needles) to be disposed at its waste management facility vendor. Three 12 gallon sharp containers were filled. Above is Box Butte General Hospital (BBGH) Pharmacist Matt Pinneo at right preparing to put on some gloves to handle medications, while Box Butte County Deputy Sheriff J.D. Sutphen sorts a bag of drugs brought in by a resident.

Another BBGH pharmacist, Rebekah Knudson, also donated her time for the event. The Pharmacy Department of BBGH has helped the Box Butte Sheriff Department with Drug Take Back Day since it was first offered by the DEA in 2010. Box Butte General Hospital is an equal opportunity provider and employer.
