Six AHS Athletes Headed To State Track & Field - Alliance High will send three gold medalists and two double-medalists, among six qualifying at yesterday's District meet, to the State High School Track & Field Meet at Omaha next week. AHS qualifiers are: Jodan Hooper, 1st-long jump, 3rd-200 meter dash; Kayla Friesen, 1st-pole vault, 2nd-300 hurdles; Myles Mills, 1st-pole vault; Jayme Nunes, 2nd-3200 run, Jess Schmid 3rd-200 meter dash; and Kyle Hinton, 3rd-discus. Two AHS relay teams, the boys 4x100 and girls 4x400 are awaiting announcements on possible wildcard berths.

Alliance Recognized As A Tree City USA Award Community - Alliance continues to be recognized as a Tree City USA Award community. Communities and individuals across Nebraska were recognized for their work with tree resources during the Nebraska Community Tree Conference and Tree City USA ceremony last month. Alliance has been in the program 16 years.

KAB Celebrating Last Month Of Contest - Keep Alliance Beautiful is celebrating the last month of the Students for Recycling Contest with "1000 Bags in May." This is a display at the Newberry Building to show Box Butte County residents how many bags of No. 1 plastic, equal to 5,600 pounds, are being kept out of the landfill during this contest. On Saturday May 31, Keep Alliance Beautiful will celebrate the end of the contest and lead a Recycling Parade from Alliance to the Recycling Center in Scottsbluff to take all of these bags to be recycled.

Water Rate Hikes Discussed - Alliance City Council emphasizes education four months prior to significant water rate hikes. EPA-required measures to treat arsenic in the municipal water system are expected to bring the city $4.67 million in debt. City water users can expect a straight rate increase, surcharge for exceeding 700 cf and a charge even without using any water.

APS To Get Extra $906,801 - The final figures for state aid for schools have bee released and Alliance Public Schools will be receiving about $7.5 million for the 2008-09 school year. Superintendent John McLane said that the final figure for Alliance Public Schools is $7,576,448, an increase of $906,801 over the 2007-08 amount.
Children's Mental Health Awareness Week - Next week is Children's Mental Health Awareness Week, and the Alliance Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 136 is doing something for it. This Sunday morning at 11 a.m., the Alliance Fraternal Order of Eagles motorcycle club, the local chapter of the Eagle Riders, will begin a state-wide, six-day "Pony Express Ride" that will lead to and end at the steps of Nebraska State's Capital Building. Here they will deliver letters to Governor Heineman, letters meant to illuminate the issues surrounding children's mental health.

Two Plead Guilty and One No Contest Yesterday - Yesterday in Box Butte District court: James C. Schmidt, 30, Lincoln, pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted second-degree assault on an officer, a Class IIIA felony. Kyle L. Stairs, 26, Alliance pleaded no contest to attempted second degree assault and third degree assault, both Class I misdemeanors, and disturbing the peace, a Class III misdemeanor. Jeffery W. Frerichs, 37, Alliance, pleaded guilty to attempted strangulation and third degree domestic assault, both Class I misdemeanors.

BF Food Pride Looking At Closing - Seven years ago, long-time Alliance grocery store Shop'N Save became BF Food Pride when it was purchased by the Ball family. This month, the store is looking at closing, according to B.J. Ball. He said Panhandle Co-op and other grocery chains are looking at buying the store here in Alliance, and should let him know by next week - if the store cannot be sold it will close within three weeks.

SFC Holloway Returns To Alliance - Sgt. First Class Steve Holloway, will be returning home this week for the first time since he was wounded in Mosul, Iraq on January 15, 2007. His parents are hosting an open house for him at the Alliance Fire Hall, Sunday, May 4th from 2-4 p.m. They would like the community to know they are welcome. Also, there will be an escorted motorcade leaving from the Holiday Inn at 1:30 p.m. It will proceed east to Emerson, north to 10th, east to Box Butte, south to 3rd, then east to the Fire Hall. They would encourage people to participate by bringing their flags, banners, balloons, etc., and lining the escort route.

Recycling Trailer Closing For One Week - Keep Alliance Beautiful will be having maintenance and repair work done on the Large Recycling Trailer beginning May 1, 2008. The large recycling trailer will not be available to collect materials for an estimated period of one week. The small recycling trailer will remain available through this period.

Schmidt Pleads Guilty To Charges - James Schmidt pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted second degree assault on an officer, a Class IIIA felony, Wednesday morning in Box Butte District Court. In exchange for the plea charges of use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony and terroristic threats were dismissed. Schmidt could receive a maximum of 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine. Sentencing is set for May 27.

School Records Fall At Western Conference - Jordan Hooper set a new AHS long jump record while Myles Mills hit a new school mark in the pole vault yesterday at the Wester Conference track & field meet hosted by Alliance.
Alliance Man Charged In Alleged Stabbing - An Alliance man has been charged in a cutting incident about one week ago. Kyle L. Stairs, 26, was originally charged with second-degree assault, a Class IIIA felony, third-degree assault, a Class I misdemeanor, use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony, a Class III felony, and disturbing the peace, a Class III misdemeanor. However, the misdemeanor charges have been dismissed. He is scheduled for arraignment in Box butte District Court on April 30 and is jailed on a $50,000 bond.

Local Seven-Year-Old Nearly Drowns - The Alliance Emergency Unit responded to the 1200 block of East Highway 2 yesterday afternoon just before 3:30 p.m. A seven-year-old male had been pulled from a swimming pool and was described as not breathing. CPR was performed at the scene and he was reported to be breathing again upon transport to Box Butte General Hospital.

Local Pilot Celebrates 40 Years Flying - Larry Hansen has been on the wing since April 26, 1968. Over the weekend the Alliance pilot and flight instructor celebrated 40 years since his certification. He has completed more than 32,800 hours of flight time.

AVFD To Sponsor Car Seat Ed Program - A car fitting and education station will be available 2-6 p.m. Friday, April 25, in the Alliance Plaza parking lot along West Third. The event is sponsored by the Alliance Volunteer Fire Department, Box Butte General Hospital and the Alliance Lions Club. Trained technicians from Alliance and the region will inspect car seats and ensure proper installation as well as provide information on child passenger restraint law and general safety.
Amazing Litter Race Returns - It's going to be like an Easter egg hunt, but with trash. It's the second annual Amazing Litter Race, a race that involves community participants, trash bags in hand, a time limit, and prizes. The Amazing Litter Race, a Great American Cleanup event, is taking place this 9-11 a.m. Saturday, April 26.

Fights Discussed At School Board Session - Monday night at the Alliance Public Schools Board of Education work session, Alliance High School Principal Dick Zarkowski presented information regarding fights at the high school. He said he had a call from a concerned parent that he had appeared on an Internet video of a fight. He noted that he was not part of the fight, but was only trying to break it up.
Grim Reaper Visits HHS - On Wednesday, senior students at Hemingford High School will be able to look death right in the eye as the Grim Reaper pays them a visit. The Grim Reaper Project is meant to draw attention to the consequences of drinking and driving during activities such as prom and graduation. Two victims taken every hour is representative of the national statistics for drunken driving fatalities.

Alliance Teen Named Miss Nebraska Teenager 2008 - Sydney Swanson of Alliance has won the title of Miss Nebraska National Teenager 2008. Swanson, daughter of Jim and Kathi Swanson of Alliance, is a sophomore at Alliance High School and an active member of 4-H. She will be representing Nebraska in July at the America's National Teenager pageant in Nashville, Tenn.
April Is National Child Abuse Prevention Month - April is national child abuse prevention month and this year will mark the launch of a year-long public relations campaign to bring focus to the issue. The campaign, called Rethink Your Reaction - Laugh, Talk, Ask, is designed to educate Nebraska residents about the importance of positive interactions between children and the adults who care for them. It is co-sponsored locally by the Panhandle Partnership for Health and Human Services (PPHHS) and the Nebraska Statewide Child Abuse Prevention Partnership.

Fire Danger Still A Concern Even With Moisture - Though the Alliance area has benefited from recent moisture, the threat of fire remains a concern especially with higher temperatures and wind. The Alliance Volunteer Fire Department responded to a right-of-way fire 12 miles east of Alliance yesterday. The ground was black with little sign of flames as fire trucks arrived, Shoemaker said the ground was still hot and flare-ups did happen. The AVFD responded with two grass rigs, one tanker and a command unit. While there was moisture in the area yesterday, Fire Chief Troy Shoemaker said, the grass was still dry enough to catch fire.
AHS Summer School In Place - As the end of the school year approaches, some students might be worried about whether they have enough credits to graduate. Alliance High School is offering Summer School courses June 2-27. Mentor/Tutor Shannon Garwood said the computer lab at the school would be open 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday during the Summer School program, noting that students can work on the lessons when they want.

Sexual Assault Charges Dismissed Against Grant - Judge Leo Dobrovolny dismissed all charges in a case against Todd Grant, 46, Alliance, Wednesday in Box Butte District Court. Grant pleaded not guilt yearlier this year to one count of first-degree sexual assault of a child, a Class II felony; one count of attempted sexual assault, a Class III felony; and six counts of third-degree sexual assault of a child, a Class IIIA felony. The case was dismissed without prejudice though may be retried at a later date as there is no statute of limitations.

Choice Gas Program In Alliance - Alliance subscribes to the Choice Gas Program, an annual selection process concerning local natural gas providers and their customers’ preferences. This program allows the Alliance customer to annually select the local natural gas supplier of choice and to choose from a few personalized billing options. This year the selection period is April 18 through May 1. In Alliance, providers are Oneneke, SourceGas, (formerly Kinder Morgan) and A.C.E. (Alliance for Community Energy).

BBGH Employees Receive Network+ Certification - Box Butte General Hospital’s Jim Parks, COO/CIO, and Tony Hindman, PC Support Technician recently earned their Network+ certifications, after attending 15 all day sessions and passing their exam, completing what was essentially a semester’s work of study. The certificates essentially put a stamp of approval on what the two have learned over years of “on-the-job” self-taught training. The training and certification testing included topics such as designing, installing and troubleshooting data networks, principles of data routing and maintaining data security.
Local Boy State Overall BB Gun Champ! - Eli Rischling of Alliance was named the State Overall BB Gun Champion in the 11-12 year old division at the State 4-H BB Gun & Air Rifle Championships. During the April 5-6 event, he also received the high point score in the Prone and Sitting Positions. A five-member team from Box Butte County competed against 4-H'ers from 22 other counties.
Kyle Hinton Headed To Shrine Bowl - Kyle Hinton will represent Alliance High in the 2008 Shrine Bowl July 26 at the University of Nebraska's Memorial Stadium. He will play on the North team to be guided by Head Coach Jeff Tomlin of Grand Island Senior H.S. and a former head football coach at AHS. Hinton was a key player in Alliance's playoff drive during the 2007 season.

Weekend Accident Brings Charges - Police cited Douglas K. Kolle, 27, Alliance, for driving under the influence and reckless driving after an accident Friday night at about 9:30. An APD report states that a vehicle, driven by an Alliance juvenile female, was traveling north on Box Butte when the driver made an illegal u-turn on 11th and collided Kolle. The juvenile driver and three passengers were treated at BBGH and released.

KAB Awarded $13,458 In Funding - The Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality has awarded Keep Alliance Beautiful $13,458.36 to take advantage of a product derived from recycled tires. After a test project involving several Alliance yards, KAB offered crumb rubber for sale at a lower price than available commercially. The NDEQ funding will reimburse KAB for the rubber landscaping mulch set for delivery later this spring.

Local Dog Owners Want Park For Pooches - A group of Alliance citizens is trying to start a dog park in town. Though not formally organized yet, they call themselves the Alliance Dog Owners Group, or A-d.o.g. They are waiting for approval from the city to have the park, and on a location for it, before moving ahead with formally organizing the group and raising funds.

Alliance VA Clinic May Be Closing - Instead of previously discussed improvements at the Alliance VA clinic, it may be closing down. According to Lewis Midgett, county veterans service officer at the Slagle Building, it was announced at a veterans service meeting recently that some veterans clinics, including ours, might be closing down by the end of this year.
Parental Alienation Awareness Day - By proclamation of the Governor of the State of Nebraska, April 25th is recognized as Parental Alienation Awareness day. He said those participating in the fights and filming them could face criminal charges, but those posting them on the Internet might not be charged.

Juvenile In Custody After In Gun Incident - The Alliance Police Department took one juvenile subject into custody while a second juvenile, both of Alliance, has been named a suspect after an incident last night involving a gun in the 600 block of West Third. Lieutenant Ken Hart said the gun was not a real one but a BB gun that looked real. Hart said according to the report the two juveniles are accused of threatening a third juvenile.

Junior Fire Patrol Returns! - Volunteer firefighters did not make a commitment to devote hundreds of hours to their communities overnight. The Alliance Volunteer Fire Department is bringing back a program that, years ago, may have inspired some of its members. Junior Fire Patrol returns to the fire hall at 6 p.m. this Thursday, April 10.

"Museum" or Empty Struture? - When, or if, the large new building in Central Park becomes a museum was a point of contention in a marathon City Council meeting last night. At issue is the Memorandum of Understanding between the city and the Eldred Foundation that funded the expansion/reconstruction project. The Foundation has set a deadline a little more than a month away for the City to plan and move its exhibits in. Council members noted that the document between the parties called for the City to take over responsibility for a "museum" not an empty structure.

9-Year-Old Student Hit By Car - March 28 at 3:23 p.m. the Alliance Police Department responded to an accident involving a child at Sixth and Grand. According to a police report, Tanya M. Klinkerman, 38, Alliance, was westbound on Sixth, crossing Grand, when a 9-year-old student ran into the street and collided with the passenger side of the vehicle. No information was available on the child's condition Thursday morning.

Flouride Requirement Shouldn't Affect Alliance - The city of Alliance should not be affected by a bill that would require cities and towns with at least 1,000 residents to add fluoride to their water. According to Mike Hulquist, water superintendent for the city of Alliance, city water averages .8 ppm of naturally-occurring fluoride, which is above the minimum level required.

AHS Grad 6th At Olympic Trials - Frank Thompson, a 2006 Alliance High graduate, competed at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Shooting (Shotgun), which concluded recently. Thompson took sixth place with 495 targets in Men’s Skeet, though he did not qualify for a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team.

Scrapbooking Crop Helps Autism - A 24-hour scrapbooking crop will raise funds to increase local autism awareness. The event opens 6 p.m. Friday, April 4, at the Newberry Building.

Hwy 385 Plane Crash Report Released - The National Transportation Safety Board has released the factual report regarding the plane crash that happened over one year ago near Highway 385 and Nance Road. The report contains information about the aircraft and conditions during the crash, as well as transmission reports and witness accounts.
