County Commissioners Signed Weed Control Notice - The Box Butte County Commissioners have signed a 10-day forced control notice for a noxious weed infestation. The notice requires a landowner to control a 50- to 60-acre Canada thistle patch in a wheat field east of Alliance.

Teens Receive Decisions On Charges - In Box Butte County Court, four Alliance teenagers have received decisions on charges stemming from a June 2 vandalism incident at Carhenge. Two were ordered to pay $556 restitution, each, while the other two will have their charges considered in Juvenile Court.

Suspect Tasered By APD - The Alliance Emergency Unit responded to the 600 block of East 4th Street Friday morning. Alliance police officers were on the scene. The male subject had been shocked with a Taser. The stun gun was recently added as one of the APD's non-lethal alternatives.

The Fraternal Order of Eagles (FOE) Presents Grant - The Fraternal Order of Eagles (FOE), from its Jimmy Durante Children’s Fund, have presented a $30,000 grant to the Nebraska Boys Ranch. The grant, given as a part of a series of grants to healthcare organizations throughout the country and Canada, will support research efforts for new and better ways to treat childhood diseases. The grant was among many awarded at the 2008 Fraternal Order of Eagles International Convention in Louisville, Ky.
Box Butte County Receives Livestock Friendly Designation - Yesterday Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman and Senator LeRoy Louden made a special appearance at the Alliance Country Club. During a long awaited ceremony, Governor Heineman officially presented Marv Toedtli, chairman of the Box Butte County commissioners, with a certificate signifying Box Butte County's Livestock Friendly designation.

County Designated Livestock Friendly - Gov. Dave Heineman today announced the official designation of Lincoln, Sheridan and Box Butte County as Nebraska’s three newest Livestock Friendly Counties. There are now 11 counties certified as Livestock Friendly in the state. Sheridan, Box Butte, and Lincoln Counties join Adams, Dawes, Garden, Hitchcock, Keith, Morrill, Wayne, and Webster Counties in being designated as Livestock Friendly. “In seeking this designation, these counties officials have demonstrated their commitment to rural economic development and agriculture,” Heineman said.

Natural Resources Committee To Conduct Hearings - The Natural Resources Committee will conduct interim hearings in Chadron, Alliance and Scottsbluff Aug. 19-20, according to Sen. LeRoy Louden, chairperson of the committee. The public is encouraged to attend and participate, as the purpose of these hearings is to seek public input on legislative resolutions. The second hearing will begin at 9 a.m. on Aug. 20 at the Alliance Learning Center. The topics will be LR 291, an interim study to examine the process for obtaining an instream flow right by either a natural resources district or the Game and Parks Commission; and LR 288, an interim study to examine the causes and effects of water depletion across the state of Nebraska.
Clifford J. Caudell Charged With 3rd DUI - Yesterday in Box Butte county Court, Clifford J. Caudell, 30, Alliance, was bound over to District Court on charges of third-offense driving under the influence over .15, a Class III felony, and driving during a 15-year revocation period, a Class IV felony. The DUI charge was originally listed as a fourth offense DUI, a Class III felony.

AHS Flooded By Sunday Storm - Sunday's storm caused flooding at Alliance High School, filling some classrooms with at least two inches of water. The custodial staff, who had completed their summer cleaning and was preparing to work on the floors, is now attempting to mitigate water damage and again prepare the rooms for teachers and students to return next week.

BNSF Train Derails - Burlington Northern Santa Fe crews were working to clear a dereailment in Alliance's south yards just after midnight Saturday morning shortly after it happened. The scope of the derailment and whether the train crew sustained any injuries was not immediately clear. BNSF officials were not available for comment early Saturday morning.

City and Eldred Foundation Reach Agreement - The City of Alliance and the Eldred Foundation have reached an agreement on the Knight Museum and Sandhills Center. The agreement, approved by the City Council last night, will allow the city to take possession of the museum this weekend. The Eldred Foundation is contributing over $700,000 to the city to complete the exhibits.
Box Butte County Fair Royalty - Box Butte County Fair 2008 royalty is: Queen Megan Dimmitt, First Attendant Haylee McVicker, Second Attendant Stephanie Burger, and Miss Congeniality Kate Kraenow. Ten contestants competed for the titles and scholarships last night at the farigrounds in Hemingford. The young women were judged on a range of criteria during the contest and an earlier luncheon.

Yard Receives "Certified Wildlife Habitat" Status - An unfamiliar sign has gone up in Patricia Jones' front yard. It reads, "Certified Wildlife Habitat. This property provides the four basic habitat elements needed for wildlife to thrive: food, water, cover, and places to raise young." About a month ago, Patricia Jones yard became a certified wildlife habitat, recognized by the National Wildlife Federation. The progression to this standing, Jones said, started almost ten years ago.

Co-Op Hosts Cuban Wheat Purchasers - Yesterday, The Farmer's Co-Op Elevator hosted two Cuban wheat purchasers, providing a tour of the facilities and information on wheat grown in the area and the processes in place at the elevator such as storing and checking the wheat.
Rotarians Begin Planning International Trips - One of the major activities for the Alliance Rotary Club is sending local people across the globe on month-long, cross cultural-vocational trips. Through Rotary International, they have just completed the sending of Jaclyn Wilson to Brazil where she was able to view another culture, industries, and customs close up. Already, the Alliance Rotarians are beginning to plan two similar trips for the coming year.

Police Seeking Assistance With Thefts - The Alliance Police Department is seeking information regarding several thefts in Alliance yesterday. According to police reports, between 6:43 a.m. and 5:08 p.m. the APD responded to eight theft incidents. Also, Hart said, police are looking for information regarding a theft from the substation near the intersection of West 10th and Highway 385. He said a spool of aluminum wire was stolen, but did not know the amount. Wire is often sold at salvage yards, he said, especially in metro areas. Anyone with information regarding the thefts is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 762-3181.

RSVP Hosts Awards Banquet - The Box Butte County Retired and Senior Volunteer Program hosted their 35th Annual Awards Banquet on Saturday at the Eagles Club. Around 200 RSVP members attended and several awards were given out, including the Presidential Volunteer Service Awards, which are based on hours of service. RSVP director Terry Grosz explained that the records only go back to 2002, when they were computerized, so some people may actually have more hours than they were recognized for.
Plea Agreement Reached In Theft Case - On Friday, a defendant agreed to plead no contest in a case that has been ongoing for over a year.
Mark C. Robertson, 50, agreed to enter his plea to charges of theft by deception over $1,500, a Class III felony, and attempted theft by deception over $1,500, a Class IV felony.

City Manager Gives Budget Review - City Manager Pam Caskie gave a budget overview presentation to the City Council last night, with all members present. Caskie said the budget is slightly over $26 million. Areas of concern include higher fuel costs, a decrease in sales tax, the increasing cost of health insurance and unfilled positions. She said because of unfilled positions, the General Fund has had a surplus for the last few years. However, the city is having to draw from that surplus to balance the budget, and if the city ever gets to the point where all positions are filled, they would have a deficit.

Another Residential Fire In Alliance - Early this morning at 1:49 a.m. the Alliance Volunteer Fire Department responded to fire in the 400 block of Snyder. Alliance Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief Brad Schrum said that when they arrived on the scene at 2:01 a.m., they were met with a doublewide mobile home that was already "three fourths in fire," and flames were already coming out of the top.

West Nile Virus Confirmed In Dawes County - The first mosquito testing positive for West Nile Virus was confirmed this week from Dawes County. Environmental Health Coordinator Rebecca Thompson of the Panhandle Public Health District said Monday. There have been no positive birds reported and no human cases confirmed.
Alliance Swimmers Earn Multiple Gold - At the Alliance Swim Team's Medal Meet July 12 there were three swimmers who had two first place finishes each, Broc Anderson, Elizabeth Jensen and Morgan Keilwitz.
The 13-14-year-old 200 Free relay took first place. The team members were Broc Anderson, Lyndsey Block, Kim Hall and Morgan Boots.

Fire At 704 Missouri - This morning the Alliance Volunteer Fire Department was called to an apartment fire at 704 Missouri. Upon arrival, the apartment was fully engulfed with smoke as the firefighters entered the apartment. The family that occupied the residence all escaped. At the scene a family member confirmed that a child playing with a lighter in a closet was the cause of the fire. It appeared and was spoken by the occupants that members of the family have lost all their belongings.

Three Not Guilty Pleas In County Court - Yesterday in Box Butte District Court, three suspects entered not guilty pleas to charges against them. Jory D. Bergen, 19, Alliance, pleaded not guilty to charges of accessory to harboring and false information, a Class IV felony, and false reporting, a Class I misdemeanor. Jacob R. Duffy, 19, Alliance, pleaded not guilty to theft by taking property between $500 and $1,500, a Class IV felony; driving under the influence over .15, a Class W misdemeanor; driving under revocation, a Class II misdemeanor; refusal of a preliminary breath test, a Class V misdemeanor; obstructing an officer, a Class I misdemeanor; leaving the scene of an accident (second offense), a Class I misdemeanor; resisting arrest, a Class I misdemeanor; minor in possession, a Class III misdemeanor, and disturbing the peace, a Class I misdemeanor. Cash M. Anderson, 27, pleaded not guilty to charges of theft by receiving between $500 and $1,500, a Class IV felony, and driving under revocation, a Class II misdemeanor.

AVFD Responds To Two Fire Calls - Alliance Volunteer Fire Department responds to two fire calls Tuesday morning. The first was a grass fire caused by a lightning strike north of Alliance followed by a structure fire in the same general area. A second alarm was issued for manpower to fight the blaze at the one-story house.
Candidate Scott Kleeb To Visit Alliance - Scott Kleeb, Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Nebraska's Senator Chuck Hagel, will be in the Panhandle this week visiting with citizens in several communities including Alliance. Klebb is scheduled to arrive in Alliance at 4 p.m. and will have a roundtable discussion at 5 p.m. at the Union Hall at 723 Flack. The public is invited to An Evening in the Park with Kleeb for conversation and dessert beginning at 6:30 p.m. Friday, July 11, at the Central Park shelter house.
Courthouse Elevator Discussed - On Monday morning, the Box Butte County Commissioners discussed the courthouse elevator with David Coe, a registered engineer from Chadron. The existing elevator does not meet standards set by the Americans with Disabilities Act. Coe handed the commissioners the plans he had worked on for an elevator shaft in Dawes County, he explained that he had worked on two other elevators in the Panhandle, a church elevator and one at Chadron State University.

Veterans Cemetary Digging May Begin In October - Mayor Dan Kusek said he spoke to Sen. LeRoy Louden recently and Louden said digging for the High Plains Veterans Cemetery could begin as soon as October. Kusek said Nebraska Legislature has matched federal dollars for the project and designs will be completed later this year he hopes.

Princess for a Day Contest - The Miss Alliance/Miss Panhandle Scholarship program is taking entries for the Heritage Days Princess for a Day contest drawing.
There will be several winners drawn and those winners will get to ride with Miss Alliance, Amy Applegarth and the Outstanding Teens from the panhandle area during the Heritage Days Parade held in Alliance on July 19th. Also before the parade, they will get their hair done at A Heads Up and Magic Mirror, eat breakfast and get their pictures taken with the titleholders. Each winner will also receive a tiara!
The entry fee is $5. There is no age limit, and you can enter as many times as you want.

Bingham: Public Meeting To Be Held On Possible Post Office Closing - There will be a public meeting 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, at the Bingham Lutheran Church concerning the possible closing of the community's U.S. Post Office. All Bingham postal customers have received a letter from Kathy J. Hand, manager of Post Office Operations at North Platte. The letter cites an increase in lease cost and goes on to discuss suspending service of their Bingham location Aug. 1 as well as customer options.

Alliance Women Bound Over On DUI Charge - Mary J. Sanchez, 39, Alliance, has been bound over to Box Butte District court on a charge of driving under the influence over .15, a Class IIIA felony. The current charge against Sanchez is from a June 9 incident. According to court documents, alleged prior convictions occurred on March 11, 1999, and Feb. 27, 2006, in Box Butte District Court.

ATVs Hit Alliance Roadway - Forty-four all-terrain vehicles have been registered with the city of Alliance in the first month of a new ordinance allowing their use within city limits, according to Lt. Ken Hart of the Alliance Police Department. So far there have been no problems with the ATVs on the streets and no citations have been issued.
BBGH Budget Approved - The Box Butte General Hospital Board of Trustees approved the operating budget for 2008-09. Operating expenses are expected to total nearly $23 million, an increase of 10.5 percent. Total patient revenue is projected to increase by 11.3 percent.
APS Promotes Substitute Certificate Program - The Alliance Public Schools is promoting education to earn a Local Substitute Teaching Certificate. For many teachers, there comes a time where they are unable to instruct their students for a few days or even weeks due to illness, sporting events and other extracurricular activities or a family emergency. The certificate is available to anyone who has 60 or more semester hours of credit from any college, with only one class in professional education needed.

David J. Boerschig Sentenced - A 17-year-old has been sentenced in Box Butte County Court to one year at the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services. David J. Boerschig, Alliance, was sentenced on charges of obstructing an officer, a Class I misdemeanor, resisting arrest, a Class I misdemeanor, possession of marijuana, an infraction, possession of drug paraphernalia, an infraction, and minor in possession, a Class III misdemeanor.
